Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, Teacher of the Faith, 1153
Bernard was a Frankish abbot and the primary builder of the reforming Cistercian monastic order. After the death of his mother, Bernard sought admission into the Cistercian order. Three years later, he was sent to found a new abbey at an isolated clearing known as the Val d’Absinthe, about 15 km southeast of Bar-sur-Aube. According to tradition, Bernard founded the monastery in 1115, naming it Claire Vallée, which evolved into Clairvaux. There Bernard would preach an immediate faith, in which the intercessor was the Virgin Mary. In 1128, Bernard assisted at the Council of Troyes, at which he traced the outlines of the Rule of the Knights Templar, soon the ideal of Christian nobility. On the death of Pope Honorius II, in 1130, a schism broke out in the Church. King Louis VI convened a national council of the French bishops, and Bernard was chosen to judge between the rival popes. In 1139, Bernard assisted at the Second Council of the Lateran. Bernard denounced the teachings of Peter Abelard to the Pope, who called a council at Sens in 1141 to settle the matter. Bernard soon saw one of his disciples, Bernard of Pisa, elected Pope. Having previously helped end the schism within the Church, Bernard was now called upon to combat heresy. In 1145, Bernard traveled in Southern France and his preaching there helped strengthen support against heresy.
Following the Christian defeat at the Siege of Edessa, the Pope commissioned Bernard to preach the Second Crusade. The last years of Bernard’s life were saddened by the failure of the crusaders, the entire responsibility for which was thrown upon him. Bernard died at age 63, after 40 years spent in the cloister. He was the first Cistercian monk placed on the calendar of saints, and was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174. Pope Pius VIII bestowed upon him the title of “Doctor of the Church”.

The Blessed Virgin Mary
Anglicans believe that Jesus was both human and God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity, and so within the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, Mary is accorded honour as the theotokos, literally the God-bearer or one who gives birth to God. Anglicans of evangelical or Low Church tradition tend to avoid honouring or discussing Mary. Other Anglicans respect and honour Mary because of the special religious significance that she has within Christianity as the mother of Jesus Christ. This honour and respect is termed veneration.
Mary always held a place of honour within the English Church, but many of the doctrines surrounding her in Roman Catholic and Orthodox theology have been called into question over the centuries, most as the result of the Protestant Reformation. While Protestantism is based upon interpretation of scripture by a variety of 16th century reformers, who mostly rejected the practice of speaking directly to Mary and other saints, Anglicanism has allowed for Mary and the saints to be addressed.
Perhaps the most important point is that in the Bible Mary points to Jesus, and maybe the best way of thinking about Mary and her place in Christian devotion is to ‘love Mary as Jesus did, and love Jesus as Mary did’ (The Revd. Kamal Farah).

How well do you know your church?

Last week’s question:
Where can this cross be seen?
Answer: In the church porch over the War Memorial.

Today’s Collect
Almighty God, whose servant Dominic grew in the knowledge of your truth and formed an order of preachers to proclaim the faith of Christ: by your grace give to all your people a love for your word and a longing to share the gospel, so that the whole world may come to know you and your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

Post Communion
(for private prayer after returning to pew)
Merciful God, who gave such grace to your servant Dominic that he served you with singleness of heart and loved you above all things: help us, whose communion with you has been renewed in this sacrament, to forsake all that holds us back from following Christ and to grow into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Dominic. Founder of the Order of Preachers St. Dominic (1170-1221) was born in Spain, studied in Palencia, was probably ordained there while pursuing his studies and was appointed canon at Osma in 1199. There he became prior superior of the chapter, which was noted for its strict adherence to the rule of St. Benedict. In 1203 he accompanied Bishop of Osma to Languedoc where Dominic preached against the Albigensians (heresy) and helped reform the Cistercians. Dominic founded an institute for women at Prouille in Albigensian territory in 1206 and attached several preaching friars to it. When papal legate Peter of Castelnan was murdered by the Albigensians in 1208, Pope Innocent III launched a crusade against them headed by Count Simon IV of Montfort which was to continue for the next seven years. Dominic followed the army and preached to the heretics but with no great success. In 1214 Simon gave him a castle at Casseneuil and Dominic with six followers founded an order devoted to the conversion of the Albigensians; the order was canonically approved by the bishop of Toulouse the following year. He received Pope Honorius III’s approval in the following year, and the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) was founded. Dominic spent the last years of his life organizing the order, traveling all over Italy, Spain and France preaching and attracting new members and establishing new houses. The new order was phenomenally successful in conversion work as it applied Dominic’s concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with popular needs. He died on August 6, after being forced by illness to return from a preaching tour in Hungary. He was canonized in 1234 and is the patron saint of astronomers. His Feast day is August 8.
